The metabolism holds the key to our energy expenditure and weight loss. This is why the above questions (in the title) may be some of most important questions you can ask yourself when it comes to gaining knowledge and total mastery over your health and fitness… oh, and let’s not forget achieving our ideal bodyweight.
What Metabolism is…
The metabolism is actually a name for the complete set of processes that are chemically taking place in a continuous cycle in order to sustain life within the human body. These chemically induced processes allow the body to produce catalyzed enzymes that produce reactions that help the body to maintain, sustain, grow, heal and respond to environmental conditions. This includes the digestion of food, which is broken down molecularly and the transportation of the nutrients and chemical components throughout the body to supply cells with their needs.
A metabolism is present in all living organisms, although we’re primarily concerned with how your metabolism works and what you can do to manipulate the metabolism to your advantage, so that you can lose weight, maintain or grow muscle and look and feel your very best. So let’s get started!
How Metabolism works…
Your metabolism has two parts, which helps it properly regulate your body. Think of these two parts as yin and yang. These two parts are anabolism and catabolism. When your body is one of these states the “sm” is dropped and a “c” is added, e.g., anabolic or catabolic.
The Catabolic State
Catabolism is the process used to break down macro-nutrients (protein, fat and carbohydrates) into a simpler (smaller) form, so that the body can use these smaller components for growth, repair and sustenance. Excess macro-nutrients, better known as food, cannot be used as energy and will be stored as fat. Which most people would like to avoid, but we’ll get into that a little more in an upcoming part of this series.
The Anabolic State
Anabolism is the process of using the components broken down from catabolism and takes place in three separate stages. In the first stage, you have the production of precursors, which leads to the second stage, which is the transformation and activation into reactive forms using energy and the final stage is the building of the precursors into complex molecules.
What affects your high metabolism ?
The primary factors affecting your metabolism are your body composition, gender, age, food intake and your physical activities. Throughout your life, your metabolism is in a state of change, this is probably more evident as we age and start to put on wanted pounds. And it’s for this reason that we need to create an environment that optimizes are stage of being and produces a healthy metabolism that burns fat and preserves muscle. This will give us more energy, a stronger immune system and a better all-around life, because… believe it or not … your mental state is also affected by your metabolism and vice versa.
